Presents for Icelandic President and Mayor

On picking up my emails a few days ago I was delighted to find one from Colin Inglis, the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull who is planning a forthcoming civic visit to Reykjavik, Iceland. Hull of course is twinned with Reykjavik and has a shared fishing heritage and since the old bad times of the Cold Wars, much has been done to foster trading and cultural relations between the two cities.

An internet search for original gifts for the President of Iceland and Mayor of Reykjavik, led Colin Inglis to my new website http://www.jillford.co.uk where he was attracted by the Spurn Point wall piece. After quick exchange of emails Colin arrived to look at the pieces “in the flesh”. He was looking for two gifts and wanted something that reflected the East Riding and importantly, was made in the region. The Spurn Point piece and another depicting the Humber Estuary both seemed appropriate with the rough seas and stark beauty of the area. They will shortly be flying off to their new Icelandic homes – and I hope they will be well received and serve as a reminder of the closeness of our two communities.

My thanks go to Colin Inglis for taking the time to seek out handmade artwork for civic gifts and for supporting small creative businesses. Buying original craft work not only encourages small businesses such as my own but also ensures the recipient has a one-off piece that has been made with skill and passion.

“Wanting a gift fit for a President but also with a strong local connection, Jill Ford’s ceramics, especially her wall plaques, beautifully crafted, delicate and freezing in porcelain the beauty of East Yorkshire’s countryside, fitted the bill perfectly.”     Councillor Colin Inglis Lord Mayor Kingston upon Hull
