Old Roses Jewellery

Purity, strength and beauty  – the qualities of bone china – white clay that fires to a matte finish with a high degree of translucency. If light chances to shine behind the pieces they will glow with a seductive luminosity. Solid silver settings and chains give sparkle and life to the pieces.

The inspiration for this flamoyant and rather romantic jewellery comes from the complex structure of the old English shrub rose – Charles de Mills. Like the thrown bowls and dishes of the Old Roses range, the full flat roses are made from many tiny slivers of clay all modelled together to from a single head.

I designed the setting for the brooch from sketches I made of the shrub rose growing in a garden in Thixendale. A jeweller friend made up the master for me then I sent it to Birmingham where a specialist firm cast it in solid silver. I add the silver clasp and three delicate white bone china roses to make an elegant brooch that I find enhances many outfits.
